The Newport Folk Festival is one of the longest running music festivals in the country and one which has played host to an incredible list of musical talent over the decades. Situated in Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island, the festival plays host to tens of thousands of attendees from all corners of the globe, and a roster of musical talent that spans all ages. Newport is unique in that both fans and musicians are regarded as a family. The backstage area is a welcoming, creative space where musicians with decades of experience mingle and learn from those just beginning.

For the past four years, Giles Clement has become an integral part of the Newport experience and has brought his portrait studios to the festival site. Over the course of three days, Giles works behind the scenes collaborating with artists  to create unique and lasting portraits.

The Giles Clement Studio has become essential to the Newport backstage experience and is a coveted stop for every musician playing the festival.  We would love to work with your brand to bring to life the faces and stories of some of the world's most talented musicians through the lens of Giles Clement at Newport Folk Festival 2018.

 

ABOUT GILES

Giles Clement is a photographer with a style and approach to his craft that echos the work of a previous generation of artists. He has become known internationally for crafting honest, enduring portraits on large sheets of clear glass using a photographic process more than 160 years old. 

His musician subjects have included Kris Kristofferson, Fiona Apple, Roger Waters, Elvis Costello, Regina Spektor, Burt Bacharach, Nathaniel Rateliff, Nick Offerman, Questlove, Maceo Parker, Shakey Graves and many, many others. 

Images are made with a camera of his own design, a thirty-five pound intricate sculpture of aluminum and carbon fiber. The lens he uses was manufactured in 1918, originally designed as an aerial reconnaissance lens for use in German Zeppelins during WWI. 


The Giles Clement Studio at Newport Folk Festival®

Returning for the fifth year, Giles' studio has become a staple of the backstage experience for the Folk family. In his studio within the historic Fort Adams walls, Giles shoots and processes stunning 16"x20" Ambrotypes directly to glass using a lens from 1918. Along with ownership of the entire Studio experience, partner brand will benefit from ample digital amplification, onsite brand exposure, and 1-1 interaction with artists & managers backstage. 

The original glass images created this year of artists will be taken to New York City for display in an art gallery. This opening of this gallery show would give an opportunity for your brand to be on hand sharing product.

Newport Jazz Festival

The following weekend, at the same site is the Newport Jazz Festival. In 2017 we were excited to stay and capture some of the worlds best jazz musicians in the same studio. This year with your help we would love to do the same. With our assets already in place the cost of adding Jazz would be significantly less than the Folk Festival and reaches a whole new segment of the music lovers audience.

Onsite Gallery Space

The Newport audience is one which, even more than other festivals, feels connected and invested in the artists who the come to see. To bring them into the studio experience backstage we have the option of displaying the ambrotype photographs taken during the weekend in an audience facing museum building. 

There's also an option of an interactive element with live-streaming video from the studio itself for realtime immersion into our creative process. 

Extended Branded Content Media

The process of creating an ambrotype is one which is at the same time foreign and fascinating for audiences both in person and in video. Each image appears magically out of a water bath and each is unique and sometimes unexpectedly beautiful. Previous pieces on Giles Clements process and art have been virally shared to millions as well as run on PBS, NPR, BoredPanda, MyModernMet and TBS Television. This process would be a perfect opportunity for an extended branded content piece, potentially including your brands product. 

There is also the possibility of Giles bringing his studio to your companies headquarters or another location to work with you in creating some unique pieces of your innovators and creators. 

Post Festival Gallery Show

In addition to the partnership at the festival we would love to work with your brand in sharing the 2018 portraits, and those taken at Newport for the past five years, in an art gallery environment in New York City. This gallery show would give a wider audience the chance to connect with the brand, and generate organic visibility. Prints would be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds going to the Newport foundation to support future musicians in the creation of their art.

The Studio 

Fort Adams, a former military outpost founded in 1799 has since become a state park and the site for the Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals which began in 1959. Our studio lies inside this beautiful structure and over the past five years has become a place that musicians have come to value as a quiet haven. The making of their portraits is an anual collaborative effort between themselves and the photographer to preserve the memory of a beautiful weekend. It's a little magical, and an experience that with your help, we hope to recreate in 2018.
