Falling

Dreams of Falling No. 1 - Kyla Ernst-Alper

Growing up in a religious environment with constantly changing and often inexplicable set of rules, I had a reoccurring nightmare in which I was falling. The fear was never the pain which could result from hitting the ground, but a more terrifying sense of not knowing where the ground was or when the impact would come. The past six months have brought back those dreams with the pervasive and unnerving sense that I’m in a bottomless free fall. Talking with other artists it’s definitely not a feeling unique to me.

To give form to this mental sensation I’ve collaborated with four performing artists in New York City. Together we created a series of photographs which attempt express our shared sense that we are still in the air, that there’s no safety net and none of us are quite sure where the bottom is.

Each of these images are currently available as two limited print editions, 16x20 and 8x10. Proceeds from print sales will be split with the artists to ensure they’re able to weather this storm and come out the other side able to continue creating beauty.
